Workshop 1 - Thursday May 13th and Friday May 14th 2010

Revising and Reconnecting with Narrative Perspectives:

A way of working in counselling therapy and community.

Two days exploration will provide a refresher for those who have learnt some narrative ideas but feel they have gone a bit stale, or the ideas are hard to always put into practice or the ideas have some tricky parts in practice.

The workshop will incorporating the Vgotsky ideas of going from the known and familiar to what might possibly become known. This will make this workshop interesting and enhancing of skills. It will also bring you up to date on some of the later developments from the last years of Michael White’s work if you have not reviewed these for a while.

Workshop 2 - Monday 21st June - a one day workshop

Working with those who experience Loss and Grief: using re-membering conversations

Day one will reflecting on familiar ideas about responding to profound grief and loss and will explore practices that can enhance our skills for supporting those dealing with this in their lives.

We will also re-examine ideas about distress and the implications of current understandings of its expression.

Day Two will offer an opportunity to explore the effect of and skills for facilitating Re-membering conversations.

Both days will develop ideas for practice that will be useful in working with many issues that are challenging in many therapy and counselling conversations as well as those of loss and sadness in particular.

The use of Michael White’s ideas on “Saying Hello Again” and Re-Membering conversations can in my experience really transform our counselling practice and allow movement when client’s lives seem to be stuck in very uncomfortable ways.

Workshop 3 - Thursday 19th August and Friday 20th August 2010

Trauma Responses and Viewing Distress from Another Angle

Day One

Many counseling situations expose us to stories of distress or emotional pain that might be so overwhelming that we can experience ourselves at a loss for what to do or they have us resort to practices that we feel are inadequate or we would prefer not to use.

In the later years of his work Michael White presented refreshing understandings of people’s expressions of distress. These ideas when grasped and introduced into our counselling practices can allow us to support those who consult us in making useful sense of their experience and finding ways out of intolerable ‘stuckness’.

Day Two

Some of the most recent and influential areas of narrative thought and practice have been applied to the experience of trauma and dealing with its effect on people’s lives.

These two days are a starting point for exploring the development of useful practices for working with issues related to trauma. These issues can emerge in counselling work we do even when we have not anticipated it. Again these skills and ideas will enhance many areas of your work even if it is not primarily designated as Trauma work eg. Mental Health, sexual assault, migration etc.
