About Sydney Narrative Therapy
The Sydney Narrative Therapy centre offers Narrative Approaches to therapeutic conversations with individuals, families, couples, community groups and teams. Narrative counselling encourages the reclaiming of ideas that will gives a person a much more robust sense of who they are and what they can make possible.
Michael White Remembered
It is 12 months on April 4th since the sudden death of Michael White. Over the past 12 months we have sadly missed Michael . Over the past 12 months we have relished Michael’s many ideas. What a legacy to be left with ideas for the development of thought and practice. That legacy continues to take us forward and encourage us in our lives and work. What a gap to have no further friendly gathering or stimulating trainings. There are many times and this week is one of them when we yearn for Michael live. There are many times when we just treasure what Michael left for us to run with. As we reflect we wish all who loved and appreciated Michael good re-memberings.

›› About Narrative Therapy
Narrative Therapy was initially developed during the 1980s, largely by Australian Michael White (Dulwich Centre) and his friend and colleague, David Epston, of New Zealand. Their approach became prevalent in North America with the 1990 publication of their book, Narrative Means to Therapeutic Ends, followed by numerous books and articles about previously unmanageable cases of anorexia, ADHD, schizophrenia, and many other problems. In 2007 White published Maps of Narrative Practice, a presentation of six kinds kinds of maps for therapeutic conversation.
›› The Sydney Narrative Therapy Centre Review of Training and Planning for 2009
The feedback on training for the year 2008 was really positive and encouraging.
Not only regarding the content of workshops but also the style of presentation which I have called learning up (rather than teaching down).
Participants talked of the value of discussing the ideas that informed a concept and deconstructing the concept itself as having allowed them to expand and add to their own knowledge.
Exercises in the small groups last year were seen as very generative of skills development.
The incorporation of a reflexive review of ideas as they were proposed or discovered was seen as matching interest with learning.
We have been asked to do more of the same in 2009
Organization of the training was at times tricky there were a lot of people who expressed willingness and interest but who were prevented from attending often at the last minute.
It is easy to understand how this happens but it does create many practical difficulties so we have had to put a few requirements in place for the year ahead. A couple of the trainings were down to only 4 participants which was just a wonderful learning environment but not entirely practical from an organizational point of view.
We remain keen to share and to facilitate the sharing of narrative ideas and their development in the world of health, welfare, education and community work.
So here are the guidelines for 2009
Training program dates for 2009 will be announced soon on this site
